Weekly Update #1: Moving out, Week One

So this is the first day of packing and Preparing for the big move. My lease is up on the 31rst and I need to have all my belongings in storage on the Friday before then.

Yesterday I setup my new storage unit and mailbox, both at the same location just a couple miles from my work, nice and convenient. I was able to get a pretty reasonable deal and the people running the place seemed pretty nice. The lady that helped me has a family member who did the same thing while working for the same company, so she gave me an extra discount. Thats a nice way to start off a business deal!

As luck would have it, my last stop of the day has a broken cardboard bailer so they had a whole bunch of boxes they wanted to get rid of.

Yesterday when I got home I immediately started dismantling my home theater as that room would turn into the main working room for the move. I also poured myself a glass of port to get things rolling along smoothly. Naturally, I forgot to get a before shot, so here it is right after starting:

And after the curtains have been removed:

I didn't get too much further last night before having a drink with my roomie and watching some post-season baseball. Today I made a BUNCH more progress though. I started by removing most of the furniture I don't plan to keep and I took it off to the local thrift store. One Pimpy Red Van full of furniture:

Later I took almost as much stuff to the local dump and recycling center, including over 300 magazines I'd likely never open again. If you've never done a mass dumping of junk before, then you just don't know how liberating it is. I've done it several times in my adult life and of all the stuff I've disposed of, there is very little I wish I had kept. It is extremely freeing to let it all go.

Here is part of the junk before taking it away:

Here is the keeper pile as it sits now, waiting to head off to storage:

And here is the theater as it sits now, the TV and Blu-Ray player on the right go to my cousin, the boxes in the middle are empty and the electronics on the left go to my father. There are a few empty product boxes there that will stay until the last day as they are currently in use.

As this point all my closets and most of the cabinets are empty. Next week I'll tackle the bathroom, livingroom, shed and maybe the shop.

On Sunday I'll make the first post covering the financial side of things, from the goals, the starting point and how I plan to get there.

Stay tuned!
